Sanctuary Institute Background

The Sanctuary Institute, a division of ANDRUS in Yonkers, NY provides training and consultation services to the organizations that work with vulnerable adults, children and families with an aim to help an agency’s leaders reclaim a culture of hope and innovation. The Sanctuary Institute’s transformational process requires deep commitment, but rewards participants with powerful and measurable organizational change.

This transformational process emerged from a collaborative effort between Dr. Sandra Bloom and ANDRUS.

ANDRUS has a longstanding history in the New York metropolitan area for excellence in a range of services to children and families. In early 2001, the campus programs became a proving ground for a trauma-informed organizational and environment-based care intervention called the Sanctuary Model. Within five years of introducing the model on campus, ANDRUS‘ leadership partnered with Sanctuary founder, Dr. Sandra Bloom, and her colleagues from Philadelphia to construct a training institute that would offer the Sanctuary Model to other human service organizations. The early successes of training and coaching other agencies to use Sanctuary sparked the birth of what is now the Sanctuary Institute and we now serve over 800 organizations globally.

Our annual conference is in support of our global network that have embraced and practiced the Model to create organizational change. How will you impact your environment and reclaim a culture of hope and innovation!

Vincent Felitti

Co-Principal Investigator, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (Ace) Study

A renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Vincent J. Felitti is one of the world’s foremost experts on childhood trauma. Leading the charge in research into how adverse childhood experiences affect adults, he is co-principal investigator of the internationally recognized Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, a long-term, in-depth, analysis of over 17,000 adults. Defying conventional belief, this study famously revealed a powerful relationship between our emotional experiences as children and our physical and mental health as adults. In fact, the ACE study shows that humans convert childhood traumatic emotional experiences into organic disease later in life. Revolutionary at its inception, Felitti’s groundbreaking research remains extremely relevant to today’s healthcare models.

Founder of the Department of Preventive Medicine for Kaiser Permanente, Felitti served as the chief of preventive medicine for over 25 years. Under Dr. Felitti’s leadership, his department provided comprehensive medical evaluations to 1.1 million individuals, becoming the largest single-site medical evaluation facility in the western world. During this time, Felitti’s revolutionary health risk abatement programs incorporated weight loss, smoking cessation, stress management, and a wide range of cutting-edge efforts to reduce patient risk factors. Dr. Felitti is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, and a Fellow of The American College of Physicians. He is currently Senior Editor of The Permanente Journal and on the International Editorial Board of the Swiss medical journal, Trauma und Gewalt. Dr. Felitti has served on advisory committees of the Institute of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association, the Committee of the Secretary of Health and Human Services for Healthy People 2020, and the Advisory Committee on Women’s Services at SAMHSA. A noted expert on the genetic disease hemochromatosis, as well as obesity, he educates audiences around the country on these two very common, deadly maladies.

An engaging speaker, Felitti has traveled the world speaking with audiences and various policy leaders about his research. A well versed medical expert, Felitti also uses his knowledge to speak out against domestic violence and other forms of childhood trauma. Drawing on his years of experience, he has become an important voice advocating for the wellbeing of children everywhere. While time may not heal all wounds, Felitti helps show audiences how we can understand these physical and mental traumas, and ultimately, prevent them.

Call for Proposals

As a member of the Sanctuary Network of practice, we invite you to submit proposals for workshops for the Sanctuary Network Conference being held from May 5 – 7, 2021.  These workshops should be relevant to the field of Trauma Informed Care and should highlight experiences, innovations, and practical strategies exemplifying the uses of the Sanctuary Model that would be interesting and applicable to organizations as they implement and sustain the Sanctuary Model.

This year’s theme for Network Days is Honoring the Past, Envisioning the Future. As such, we welcome proposals for workshops that will support this year’s theme and emphasizes the transformative nature of the Sanctuary Model.

As you plan and prepare your proposal, please keep in mind that the workshops are 60 minutes each, and presenters should include time within this window to allow for attendee questions.

Proposals will be evaluated by the Workshop Committee (a representative group of Sanctuary Network Members and Sanctuary faculty members).  Evaluators will independently review each proposal and provide a total score based on:

  • Relevance to the Sanctuary Model
  • Experiential and engaging nature of workshop design and content
  • Applicability and usefulness of information to others in the Network

An average of the evaluators’ scores will be assigned to the proposal and those with the highest scores will be selected for presentation after Committee consensus. It should be noted that each Sanctuary Network organization may submit up to three proposals. While an organization may have more than one proposal selected, the goal is to provide a diverse representative selection of workshops from across the Sanctuary Network.

To be considered you must submit all required information with your Proposal, including your bio (about 100 words), headshot (for each presenter) and your credentials

The deadline for submitting proposals has passed.  Check back for future event dates.

Put your hat in for our Resiliency Award

It has certainly been a year full of the unknown. Through your relationships with our Sanctuary Institute faculty, we have heard extraordinary stories about how your organizations have come together to support one another, as well as the communities you serve during this most challenging, historic year.

In this sprit, we created an award for Resiliency at the organizational level – to honor the tremendous work you do.

The nomination deadline has passed.

Nominees will be notified on Monday April 26, 2021.
